The pistol is an antique 1850s Edmund Balchin of Hull Pepperpot (also called a Pepperbox) 32 calibre pistol which was typically used for defence protection at close range.
It appeared for sale on 2nd December 2023, through the Agoura Hills Auction House in California, and was personally owned by Johnny Cash. The pistol had a reserve price of $5000. It reached a sale price of $10,000.
Johnny Cash was a collector of firearms and Civil War memorabilia throughout his life. The Balchin gun was accompanied by Letters of Authenticity signed by Johnny Cash stating that this was part of his personal collection and a second letter of authenticity.
